Dall Sheep

This was inspired by my trip to Alaska years ago. In Denali National Park we saw so many dall sheep high above us. They would stop, stare off, and then bolt across mountain ridges and thin twisting trails on grassy hills. With their thick horns and way of thoughtfully pausing I thought they were so regal like lions, but of the mountains.

I grew up near the Chesapeake Bay of Virginia. I remember crabs clinging to the posts of docks, crab nets, water buckets. It was a game to see how many we could find. They didn’t look like this one. They were Chesapeake blue crabs, but this bright orange crab makes me think of summer and decorating a beach house or river cottage. It would be cute in a square frame hanging on a kitchen or livingroom wall.

Cat in the Back Yard

I saw a picture of a cat that looked bored on a lawn and it struck me as a funny scene. Then of course, I had to paint one and add flowers and reeds for texture, and then this cat with attitude had to squash a flower. Bored cats do that type of thing. Why? Because they can. I imagine this as a fun painting for a cat lover’s home or office wall.

Bird in the Marsh

I hoped to capture both the peace of the marshland with the waves of grasses and feathers, while this silent bird stands still, its head held high and alert in the breeze. Inspired by poetry by Mary Oliver, once again, I’m drawn to water and birds after reading her poems.
