I remember the first time I traveled to the Southwest of the United States. The sky was so big and wide that I almost felt overwhelmed. Then, as time passed, I appreciated the feeling of freedom in the expanse, in the sunsets, and bright stars at night. I also began to notice all the plants and flowers springing to life from the desert. I painted this watercolor to bring a taste of it into your home.

Inspired by an early morning walk listening to the birds hidden in the trees, I was reminded of Mary Oliver’s words, “Wild sings the birds of our hearts in the forest of our lives.” You know that magical moment when you are walking in nature and your heart is reawakened by some unexpected, special encounter.

Inspired by walks in Autumn, I began with gathered leaves for background printing. I imagined an orderly, bright, patterned textile suddenly released into an explosion of movement in the season’s winds.

Sometimes my paintings are influenced by my poetry. This piece was based on a day plein air painting, focused on banyan trees at Tetuan Plaza. I ran home to write a poem about the trees and pigeons and then painted these busy birds gathered at the base of the trees.
