Each week I paint at a local botanical garden. When the waterlilies are blossoming in the small pond, it’s a special time to paint in the shade. Often, I’ll start a piece and bring it back to the studio to finish-like this one!

Red Flowers
in a Purple Vase

This reminds me of my mother practicing flower arranging and studying Japanese design. I think because the flowers are arranged asymmetrically. I don’t often arrange flowers, but I regularly practice painting them with watercolors, trying to paint loose and enjoying capturing the colors in small fast pieces like this one.

Pink Waterlilies

Painting outside, I find that the pond is dark and the shade is cool while the flowers emerge in Spring. This time, I notice the frogs are loudly calling. Valencia’s botanical garden is my great escape from a hurried city life. I imagine this with a nice matte and frame as a serene addition to someone’s den, office, or bedroom.
