Learning By Repeating the Same Subject
Many of you know I love painting at parks and botanical gardens. Because the sunlight and shadows shift so rapidly, it is difficult to capture the moment while I’m plein-air painting. That’s why I love returning and working many times on the same subject or in the same place. I, then, return home with multiple photos and sketches, so that in the air-conditioned comfort of my studio, I build more layers on paintings or use the first ones as references to paint new pieces.
5 ADVANTAGES TO Plein-Air PAINTING
THE SAME SUBJECT
MULTIPLE TIMES
1. Ability to study certain aspects of painting the same scene in different ways: for instance, focusing on value, colors, shadow, shapes, etc.
2. Exploring and problem-solving while painting in different weather, hours of the day, and slightly altered situations makes it fresh and exciting.
3. Using different materials and tools while adapting and learning. For instance, switching from watercolors to acrylics or using pastels and then paints.
4. Moving mentally deeper into a subject and exploring feelings to convey them. For example: a cool pond, lonely field, serene seascape.
5. Enjoying familiar parameters of the same subject provides confidence for more experimentation with colors, techniques, and form.
Why I like Repeating The Subjects in the Studio
I can make larger paintings in the studio more easily without having to lug things outdoors.
Time and consistent lighting to sit with a piece and reflect on where to go next -rather than racing the sun’s changing light.
More tools and materials to grab and try on the spot.
Air-conditioning and a bathroom close by.
