I’ve Learned that We’re Never too Old to Take on Big Projects
I find it difficult to “toot my own horn” but this has been a big project and the beginning of a new part of my artistic journey. After years of teaching (and reading to) young students, I realize how much I love creating stories and illustrations. I have learned a lot with this first book, made with my friend. I never would have thought I’d be doing this at the age of 60. Sometimes it’s hard to start big, new projects as we age. We think it’s too late. There’s too much to learn. Leave it to the young. But when something lights us up, we have joy in it. It isn’t about being famous, proving ourselves, or aching for “success”. Of course ego is there, but it’s an inner voice that says…it’s time, this isn’t a dress rehearsal, this is it. Why wait? We don’t need permission. We don’t need a cheerleading team or tribe.
Something inside calls and wants to be brought out in the world. That’s how my painting feels. I wake up seeing what I will work on in the day-an image, a solution to a problem, a paint color, or a character. What a luxury. I hope you find something like this during your later years-anything-gardening, painting, pottery, dance, or singing. It won’t be perfect, but it will be good, and I believe the world will be a little better, too.
Take Me Home Please is available for adoption!
Available on Amazon. A story of a sad, lonely dog looking for a friend and home. He watches many in the neighborhood pass until finally a special someone sees him. A story for 3-6 year olds. I hope you will purchase it for children, grandchildren, and dog lovers. Over the last year I colloborated with DM FLynn who had come up with the concept as a story for his grandson. Many Zoom calls, illustrations, and technology issues later, it is now available to purchase. Available in the link below.
March 23 is National Puppy Day….
This month give a gift to your local library or Dog Foster Group!
Thanks for following my art journey and I hope you’ll share your creative journey and projects with me, too. Thanks, Marti
